A travel crib can be used for newborns up till about three years old. It comes with its own carry case and is light and easy to carry. Your child will find it snug and cozy and is perfect for long trips, much better than those hotel cribs. "The Baby Bjorn Travel Crib Light" is a great crib it sets up in under ten seconds - really, it's absolutely amazing, it will also fit in a suitcase (needs at least 20″ wide, so not all suitcases) but once unpacked it is quite large. It's certainly worth the extra money. The only small downside is the folding experience, it does require to read the manual and practice a couple of times, however, this minor negative is completely outweighed by the great positives.
For children generally over 2 years and 20lbs you can consider a car seat that is forward facing. A good choice at this time is a convertible or combination seat. This will act both as a car seat and a booster seat. Although they tend to be more expensive this is more than outweighed by the fact that one seat will last for 8 or 10 years. Make sure once again you choose a seat with a 5 point harness for additional safety. It is a good idea to choose a seat with a cup holder to help with those lengthier journeys.
b) Convertible seat: These seats can be made to face rearward or forward and are best fitted for babies of 20 to 40 pounds. The American Academy of Pediatrics advice to parents is to keep your child facing backwards till he is one year or has crossed the manufacturer's limit of weight and height. These seats are perfect if you have to follow the instructions as you can easily convert the seat into a forward facing seat.
